Are You Fit Enough?

Please remember that the levels listed below are general guidelines. Cycling ability is unique to every person, and various factors (such as heat, humidity, and consecutive days of riding) can affect performance.
Pick a tour that matches your comfort level.
If you find yourself between two levels, or if you have any concerns at all about your fitness, we strongly encourage you to contact us directly.

Slower / recreational cyclists

  • Typical weekly rides at home: 1 or 2.
  • Ride comfort: You are comfortable riding up to 40-60 km (27-37 mi) on flat to gentle rolling roads with occasional small climbs.
  • Pace: Slow and relaxed, focusing on the sights and stops.
  • Elevation: Average daily elevation gain up to 500 m (1,640 ft).
  • Climbing: No significant climbing is involved.

We recommend Gentle Cycling Tour or Women's Bike Tour

Intermediate / enthusiast cyclists

  • Typical weekly rides at home: 2 or 3.
  • Ride comfort: You are comfortable riding up to 80-100 km (50-62 mi) with up to 1,000 m (3,280 ft) of elevation gain.
  • Skills: You are comfortable on daily climbs with average grades between 6% and 10% (at your own pace) and have good bike handling skills on corners and descents.
  • Pace: Steady, brisk pace.
  • In the saddle: You should be prepared to be in the saddle for at least four hours a day and to enjoy a few challenges.

Advanced / challenging cyclists

  • Typical weekly rides at home: 3 or 4.
  • Ride comfort: You are comfortable riding over 100 km (62 mi) with over 1,000 m (3,280 ft) of elevation gain.
  • Skills: You are comfortable on multiple climbs with average grades between 6% and 10% (at your own pace) and have excellent bike handling skills on corners and descents.
  • Pace: Fast, sustained pace.
  • In the saddle: You should be prepared to be in the saddle for several hours a day.
